Hello everyone. So this video is intended to give you an idea of how to use Voyant to do text analysis and topic modeling. So first we start off by going to Voyanttools.org And then in this area here is where you would either upload or open the text that you're going to use. So just wanted to comment a little bit on what sort of data you can input. You can really add in anything in here. The thing that's most important is that the data has to be cleaned. So if you're gonna upload, say, a PDF of an article that you use in your course, you need to make sure that that PDF is actually a readable PDF and not a image. Because if it's an image then the program won't be able to read it. So that might be a little bit easier if you take something that might be in a Word document or something that you can copy and paste from a website. But like I said in the other video, pick something that you're most familiar with. Right now, I'm just going to copy and paste in the e-book for Moby Dick, just because it's a large body of text, and I was able to find a clean version online through the Gutenberg project. So I'm just actually going to copy and paste the information in here. And then I'm going to hit reveal. So if you have a file that's on your computer, you can just do upload and do it that way. So once I hit reveal, the program is going to go through the corpus and start to analyze it. So this is sort of what you get at the beginning of when you run the corpus through. So here you see at the top left, the word cloud - So it sort of tells you what are the big major words that are popping out in the corpus. So we can see there's "whale," "sea," "man," "ship," et cetera. And then another important place to look is the trend. So here we can see how the biggest five words sort of evolved throughout the texts. And the way that it was divided, it was divided into different segments. So as you can see, this blue line is "whale," okay, And in the first segment, it's got a pretty decent relevant frequency. And it sort of dips down below in segment two, and then it starts to rise and then fall. And then you see sort of the height of it in segment six, okay? And then you can also see the progression of the other terms as they go through. So this is sort of good to see, especially if you want to understand how words evolve throughout the text or the corpus. It sort of gives you those trends. Here below, we can find information about how the terms are related. So if we, for example, here it's showing us the word "whale." So it's showing us the contexts in which that word appears. And then here - it's not showing it. But it is giving you the most frequent words. This sometimes will show you sort of the topics that happen throughout the texts. It will just sort of change. But this is sort of the basics of starting off with Voyant tools. So just try it with some sort of corpus or document that you are very familiar with. Just sort of see, you know, particularly here in the word cloud, and then in the trends table to see sort of how words evolve over time, and then what are the most common words that you see? Okay, so that's sort of a way to start for the interactive activity. Of course, if you want to be able to incorporate this more, we have our teaching template, so you can incorporate the use of this tool in your classroom. And then of course, still, don't forget that you can also schedule a consult with us. So if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us.
